The Look and Tell Bible by Dawn Machell

children's bible

Sometimes finding a story bible that holds my younger children’s interests can be somewhat challenging. Countless times I’ve felt that I was wasting my time when reading bible stories to them because it was obvious they weren’t paying attention. They would be squirming around, fidgeting, and sometimes just staring off into space.

That is why I am so happy to have come across The Look and Tell Bible by Dawn Machell. This isn’t just any story bible. This wonderful resource is designed specifically for younger children who, like my children, may be fidgeters, or for children who are on the brink of learning to read. Each account included in this collection is exactly the right length, colorfully illustrated, and makes use of key words which are pictures of characters, places, or objects that are important to the story and which make the story interactive for children.

Each morning in our homeschool routine, we begin with what we call “Bible Time.” While I do realize the importance of instilling God’s Word into my children, I will admit that these were often very trying times. Frequently, after reading the day’s story or passage to them, I would ask what I had just read about and was met, consistently, with blank stares.

The Look and Tell Bible has drastically changed this activity for us. Now, I begin with showing the children the page with the illustrated key words, and I will point to them and say the words out loud, and my kids will repeat them after me.

Afterwards, I begin to read the story- just one page- and I move my finger under the words as I’m reading (this was actually at their request). When I get to a picture word, the kids all excitedly say what it is if they remember. I can honestly say that my kids pay more attention to this book than any other.

If you are a parent or loved one of young children and are looking for an appropriate way to introduce the bible to them, I highly, highly recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed!
