Taste and See- 125 Daily Meditations, by John Piper

Sometimes the hustle and bustle of this world can get the best of us and cause us to start losing focus.  Quite honestly, it happens to me all the time. I’m telling you, it is hard to carve out some quiet, uninterrupted time with God when you’ve got countless little ones underfoot who don’t understand the importance of giving Mom some alone time. What starts out as days can quickly turn into weeks, and then even months. And before you know it you realize that your faith journey has reached a plateau because you’ve unintentionally neglected your relationship with the Creator of the universe.

It’s not someplace that we Christians want to be.

These past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege to read through John Piper’s Taste and Seea compilation of 125 daily meditations on God’s Word. Piper addresses many hard truths in the pages of these books, but his ever-present hope in the Lord reminds us all that we have a lot to look forward to. He also brings to the surface many of the issues that pertain to our modern society and how we as Christians can approach them in a biblical manner. From the gospel to marriage to evolution, Piper clarifies the truth behind these topics and always backs it up with relevant Bible passages so that we can see for ourselves without relying only on an author commentary.

This book was a wonderful fit for me in so many ways. As a mom of many, I appreciated that each daily meditation is only 2-3 pages long, and the Bible passages are applicable and concise. As an avid apologist, I loved that Piper isn’t afraid to get down to the nitty gritty on topics that many church leaders are afraid to address. And as someone who never has any uninterrupted time, I certainly valued the fact that his words were written in layman’s terms and not in the vernacular of a gifted theologian (which he is). When I’m reading something this important, I want to be able to understand it before I get pulled away by one of the children!

It is well understood that John Piper is one of the greatest Christian authors of our time. I assure you, he didn’t let us down with this one, either. I highly recommend this book to all believers who are eager to delve into God’s Word but do not have the time for a full-blown Bible study. I for one can’t wait to read through it again.

Disclosure- I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

I'm Shelly, a Christ-following, homeschooling Mom of eleven children ( okay, not ALL children. My oldest is 23.) I met my husband right after graduation, and we've been together ever since. Though my life can be hectic at times... okay, ALL the time, I wouldn't change it for anything.

  1. Piper is amazing and this is one of my favorites! I’m already thinking about getting out my copy and reading it again! Thanks for the reminder. I just reread you little bio and was reminded … 11 kids! 22 or not, you have a full plate! A modern day Susanna Wesley! May your children rise up and call you blessed as I know hers did. Blessings, Shelly!
