It’s about time I come “clean” about something I’m not very proud of:
I’m terrible at keeping house. Really, really terrible.
Admitting this isn’t something that comes easy to me. In fact, before I started homeschooling, I was a total neat freak. I remember one of my kids bringing home a paper asking about what her parents like to do, and she wrote that her mom likes to clean. Sigh. I was so proud of that.
On the refrigerator it went.
My, oh, my, how times have changed. In eight years of homeschooling, my house has gone from being perfectly vacuumed (the lines in the carpet had to look a certain way), perfectly polished, and perfectly dusted to, well…
Okay, okay. Close your mouths. I’m just kidding. It’s not that bad.
But…I honestly haven’t dusted in two months, probably more…and that’s just the downstairs. Ask me when I dusted upstairs.
Go ahead. Ask me.
Never. Not once in the two years we’ve been living here. To be fair, I have had the kids dust their bedrooms maybe once or twice…ahem…but my bedroom? Nope.
It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s not that I don’t try. A few months ago, I even went so far as to type up a weekly-cleaning printable, and it kept me on track for a week or two.
And that’s probably the last time my house was dusted.
But you know what?
I’m okay with it.
I’ve come to a point in my life where I’ve finally realized that there is no such thing as having it all.
Homeschooling is hard work. It’s time-consuming, messy, and tiring. Add to that the fact that there are kids in the house all the time, and that they’re likely destroying one room as soon as you’ve moved on to the next one.
Those pictures you see of spotless houses that belong to homeschoolers? They’re not reality. At least not for those of us who are human. 😛
There has to come a time when you take a step back and prioritize what is- or should be- the most important to you: Those memories you’re making with your kids? Or an immaculate, quiet house without kool-aid stains on the carpet?
(I can help you out a bit with this one- your house will be quiet and spotless all too soon when your kids move out and are no longer there. I’m going to venture a guess that you’re going to be missing the mess more than you think you will.)
So, yeah. I’ve come to accept seeing cobwebs on the ceiling.
Because they’re no longer something to be ashamed of. They’re a visual reminder that when it comes down to what is important, I choose my kids.
Every. single. time.

If your spouse and you are okay with a lived in house, then it is okay. My kids clean our house every Saturday as I did for my single mom with my brother. Maybe you need to create a chore chart. It teaches your kids responsibility and how to clean. Mom can manage cleaning.

Oh, we do have a chore chart and do chores 3 times a day. Staying on top of dusting in a house that’s lived in by 12 people and homeschooled in simply doesn’t make the top of our priority list. 🙂

Dust, is that a thing humans even do anymore? 😉 Great post!

You are definitely not alone! I do well to keep the dishes and laundry up, and I just don’t worry about the rest of it…at least most of the time I don’t.

I can’t even keep up with the laundry!

I hate dusting, I taught the kids. It is on my list that gets moved often. Don’t ask how long its been since I dusted.

Dust I can live with (and do)! Clutter, not so much!

Having had 2 of our 6 get married and move away (soo far away, 4 and 5 1/2 hours respectively), yes, it’s much different once they all start flying away. The next 2 have finished school and are completing tertiary education and work. That puts me at only 2 students. After so long with a full car every time we go anywhere, now it’s almost too quiet. I’ve even downsized to a ‘micro’ car from a bus! And the housework? Funny how it still doesn’t get done much more often. We have a schedule that we roughly stick to. We still fluctuate but I know it won’t be that many years until it’s just me at home all the time. It’s kind of scary thinking about it. I do have a backlog of projects in mind but it will still be weird when I can have a clean and tidy house all the time. I’ll have to invite the grandchildren over just for some noise and chaos!

Haha! Love it. I hate to clean. Isn’t that why we had kids?

Ha! I think the last time I dusted (or cleaned the windows, or any of those other things that I used to do) was 6 years ago…when we had a big party here! 😛 No wonder we get along so well!

Love it! I have so much trouble with this too! Of course, I could never claim that I was very good at housekeeping even before homeschooling. I always want to do better, but homeschooling 4 kids plus dealing with one newborn…yeah, ain’t gonna happen!

Yup. It’s better to accept our limitations, right? 🙂

This is awesome! I manage to keep up on most of the clutter, laundry & basic cleaning but I have my unclean sections of my house too! What a relief to know we aren’t alone! And yes, it CAN wait….especially dusting.

Oh, you should see my laundry pile. That’s a whole other story!

What is this “dusting” I hear of?? LOL If I ignore it, it doesn’t exist, right??

I’m terrible at housekeeping as well. We try to keep the dishes and laundry up but the rest of it?!? Meh. Dusting especially gets out of control in the winter months. It’s so dark and gloomy in Michigan that dust isn’t all that noticeable. Then, once it gets sunny again, suddenly the dust is VERY visible and I’ll go around and clean things off. It’s important to try to do before we open up the windows for the first time or it’ll swirl all over in the air. LOL

Oh, I know how that is. And the fact that we have oil heat makes things even dustire!

I only clean the parts that people will see if they stop by. The rest will be clean when my seven year old doesn’t want to hang out with me anymore. He is much more important to me than dusting!

Dusting? I’m just trying to get the dishes done during the day while trying to entertain my 3 year old and take care of my nursing on demand 7 month old. I don’t know how you mamas and daddys do do it with much more children. 🤦🏻♀️
