How to Homeschool Geometry Without Losing Your Mind!

How to homeschool geometry without losing your mind!

Over Christmas break, my 12th grade daughter informed me that she wanted to take a geometry refresher course.

I was horrified.

Don’t get me wrong. I was happy to see that she’s very serious about her studies, but geometry? Thoughts of proofs, postulates, and theorems flooded my brain and made me want to take off running. Sigh. Why me??

(Disclaimer- I received free access to this course and was compensated for writing an honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Not wanting to let on that I wasn’t looking forward to this, I began searching for a curriculum that was simple, straightforward, and to-the-point. After what seemed like an eternity of searching, as chance would have it, I stumbled across the opportunity to try out an online math course, Mr. D Math.

I’m telling you, what a stroke of luck that was!

An Overview of Mr. D Math:

Mr. D Math is an online math course that offers classes in the following areas:

Each course features:

  • videos for each lesson
  • printable worksheets for each day’s assignments
  • chapter tests
  • semester exams
  • solutions
  • a grade book
  • email access to Mr. D’s staff
  • extra practice if additional help learning a concept is needed
  • interactive live classes with Mr. D himself
  • and parental access to stay up-to-date on how your child is performing.

And my favorite feature? It’s self-paced. (Although if your child plans on taking the weekly interactive classes, it would help if they were up-to-date with the lessons that are being taught each week.)

What I Love About Mr. D Math:

Okay, for the sake of being transparent, at first I was a bit skeptical about signing my daughter up for this geometry course. At heart, I’m an old-fashioned kinda gal, and I’ve always had a slight aversion to any type of online classes. Additionally, my daughter works 25-30 hours a week, and I wasn’t sure she’d be able to handle it.

I needn’t have worried. The fact that this course is self-paced has really enabled my daughter to work through it at a rate that she can manage with her busy schedule. The video tutorials are everything I was looking for in a geometry curriculum- simple, to-the-point, and no-frills.

And best of all?? I don’t have to teach it!!

Dennis DiNoia, aka- Mr. D, has done a wonderful job designing these classes. My daughter is one who really likes to have a routine, so she really appreciated that she could watch the video, either print out the assignment or copy it into her notebook, and then go back to the video if she had any questions.

Okay, I’ll admit. I may have actually been interested enough to watch several videos with her, so, yes, sometimes I was actually able to help her without wanting to lock myself in the bathroom! (Thanks, Mr. D!)

Another feature of Mr. D Math that is pretty awesome are his live classes. I don’t know about you, but when I envisioned what a live geometry class would be like, I imagined my high school geometry class where my teacher’s voice would lull me to sleep if I didn’t feverishly write down every single thing he said. (Whole lot of good that did me!)

This class wasn’t like that at all. Mr. D is the kind of math teacher I wish I would’ve had. Even though it’s just a virtual class, he really knows his students. He knows their quirks, dislikes, fears, and strengths. He jokes around with them, but he still manages to stay on task. To be honest, he makes it really easy to pay attention because he’s so engaging.

My Takeaway:

Whether you detest upper level math, or you simply need to find a curriculum that works, I highly recommend Mr. D MathNot only will your kids be in good hands, but they just might actually learn to like math.
