We have all been there: morning Bible time, a cup of coffee, a couple toddlers hanging onto our robe, and absently checking off the list:
v10: Virtuous wife…check!
v11: Husband trust…check!
v12: Good, not evil…check!
v13: Seeks wool and flax, I shop at Walmart…check!
v14: Brings food from afar, thank God for Walmart…check!
V15: Rises while night, provides food for household…maybe…
v16: Considers a field and buys it, makes profit…gulp!
To be honest, that is where I usually end with a sinking guilty feeling. I have been homeschooling for 20 years on one income. Several times we tried to find me something I could do at home while still being the full-time wife, mom, educator, etc., but to no avail. Until last November….

Then one day a little ad for VIPKID showed up on my facebook feed. VIPKID is an educational company out of Beijing that is looking for tutors in full-immersion English (no Mandarin needed, thank God!) to be linked up with Chinese children from the ages of 4 through 14.
I didn’t know if it was real or not, but they were hiring and I really needed to check v 16 off. I have a teaching degree, no experience with teaching English as a second language, but was desperate to help the household “profits” from v. 16. So I talked with my husband.
“I don’t know if it is a real thing or not, but should I throw a resume together and give it a try?” I dubiously asked. I don’t like getting my hopes up unless I have evidence right before my eyes. I guess my middle name is Thomas.
“Sure, why not?” my husband wisely counseled.
So I threw together the little I had for a resume after homeschooling for most of my adult life, and sent it in.
Two hours later I had an email scheduling an interview, and two weeks later I was a full-fledged employee of a Chinese company. I opened up my schedule, and what a surprise…
I Loved It!
A whole new world opened up before my eyes. I was instantly transported into the homes of some of the cutest Chinese children ever! I was immediately charmed by them and fell in love with not only my students, but some of their parents as well. Learning some Chinese culture is an added joy.
The more I learned about the company, the more I was impressed. They are on the cutting edge of new educational technology. The CEO Cindy Mi is an amazing visionary and she is looking to hire 50,000 teachers and have 500,000 students within a year, and she will do it. I was hired in November when they had 6,000 teachers. Now they have 20,000 and 200,000 students. Now they want to add India and other Asian countries!
Are You Interested?
If this is something you think you could do and you meet the following criteria, then this is for you. It has been such a blessing to my family and I hope it can be to yours as well.
- Native North American English speaker
- At least 2 years teaching (they count homeschooling, public education)
- 4-year college degree (does not have to be education, but it is helpful)
- A passion to teach
If you are interested, begin to google VIPKID. There are lots of articles out there and YouTube is filled with actual teachers teaching with great examples of what you need to do to fit into their program.
Curriculum is already set. You have a “classroom” screen. You are in a box, you can see your student in a box, you and the student can draw on the screen, and you have 25 minutes to go through about that many slides. It takes a time at first to figure out the process, prep for the slides, and do feedback, but after a while, you just do it on the fly. I have a limited number of props and I keep them handy. They are all within reach.

YES! I just started with VIPKID and I love that I can contribute to my family’s income in this way. I love how you related it to being a Proverbs 31 woman. Thanks again! I just started writing about my experience with VIPKID at laurarisdall.wordpress.com. Thanks!
