Let’s Talk About Those Back-to-School Memes…

Maybe it's time to stop celebrating your kids' return to school and actually start parenting.

Back-to-school time is upon us! 

Chances are, your social media accounts have already been inundated with gleeful posts and memes by parents everywhere celebrating their kids’ imminent return to school.

If you’re not the social media type, you’ve likely been “blessed” with video clips on the mainstream media outlets showcasing parents jumping up and down with excitement as their children are driven away on that big yellow bus.

I get it; it’s supposed to be funny.

But it’s not.

It’s high time parents today start using some critical thinking when it comes to their children. Enough is enough.

  1. I live in an affluent suburb of Louisville, Kentucky. My county just hired 7 new resource officers. One for each campus (there are 4), two are assigned to specific elementary schools, and I’m not sure where the third is going. These 7 are in addition to the school resource officers we already had at each high school. My husband and I have planned to homeschool since before our son was born. As a taxpayer I still want to know specifics on why we need this many officers to be a daily presence in our schools.
    I think you are so right about how society views children. My aunt was a teacher for a few years in our county. She quit to go back to her first career. When she told her coworkers, other teachers, she was quitting, almost all of them said they wished they had a second career to fall back on. The teachers don’t want to be there, so why should I send my kids there?

    1. Exactly. A while back, I mentioned to a retired teacher who is a friend of mine that my oldest son was thinking of becoming a teacher. Without hesitation, she said, “No! Tell him not to do it. It’s not what he thinks it is.” Unfortunately, I’ve heard similar sentiments many, many times since then.

  6. When I didn’t know better and sent my kids to school because I thought I had no choice, I cried that first day of school and I missed my kids so much. MY husband says school is a babysitter to most families. I will never relate to these memes and the proud pictures being posted on my IG feed of a child’s first day back to public school make me sad too.

  8. Let’s add the teacher memes about how many hours they really work, how they have to buy supplies, and how they feel they aren’t compensated appropriately. So, our kids are returning to school to be with people who are truly disgruntled about their jobs on top of all those other reasons that you had mentioned.
