Well, the truth is…yes and no.
Yes, it does take quite a bit of patience to not only spend every single day with our children when our society has trained us to be more comfortable with not being around them, but it also requires an enormous amount of patience to take on the responsibility to see to it that our children are learning and thriving.

I don’t know what it is with our culture today. We focus so much on empowerment and reaching our goals, but when it comes down to us doing anything we find a little intimidating, we pull out that trusty book of excuses. In our eight years of homeschooling, I’ve noticed that there are a large number of people who put those of us who educate our own children up on a pedestal:
You’re amazing!
You’re a superhero!
You must have superhuman patience!
You must be so organized!
You must be Mother of the Year!
As much as I’d love to take the credit for all of those things, there’s just one problem…
None of that is true.

Anytime I meet someone new and disclose to them that I homeschool, their immediate reaction is to recoil and ask, “How can you stand being with your kids all day?” I’m going to admit that at this point in my life, I cringe and think, “How can they think it’s okay to say that?” I’m not going to pass judgment on these people, however, because I’ve been there.
Since we’ve all grown up with the routine of children being separated from their families for 35 hours a week and 36 weeks a year minimum, it’s a valid question. As a society, we just aren’t used to being with our own kids anymore because we’ve grown so used to them being gone most of the time in school or daycare.
