What Do Homeschool Students Really Think of Homeschooling?

Browse the internet for just a few seconds, and you’re bound to see articles and posts written by homeschool parents all over the web. Some of these commentaries make homeschooling seem like it’s a breeze. They post pictures all over social media  of their perfect-looking children researching the cure for cancer .

Others are rather pessimistic and give the opposite impression- that homeschooling is a nightmare, and they don’t know why they ever did it in the first place.

Still others fall somewhere in between, highlighting their great and not-so-great moments in their home learning environment.

But did you ever wonder what homeschooled kids really think about their lives? 

 

Yesterday I asked my 10 and 12 yr old daughters if they would be willing to write a paragraph or two about homeschooling for me to share here today. I gave them the option to write about absolutely anything that had to do with it because I figured that their opinions would come through no matter what they wrote. They agreed, although a bit reluctantly since it was the weekend after all, but here are their sentiments on this particular subject.

Caollin- Age 12

“I love homeschooling because I can stay home with my family. I also like homeschooling because I don’t act like most public school kids. Homeschooling does not take that long, and you can decide when you want to do it. I also get to do art all the time, and we make lapbooks, which are a fun little activity.

When you homeschool there is no more rushing to look for your kids’ backpacks or shoes or outfits. Homeschooling is the best!”

 

London- Age 10

“For homeschooling we do notebooking for Harry Potter, and we also did it for Peter Pan. We do unit studies and activities, and sometimes we bake for math. We often go to the park for school, and we can play there. The other day we went out into the alley behind our house and played shadow tag. It was really fun. We also made a board game, too. Right now we just finished a lapbook for The Kingdom of Thrim. Last year we did a Halloween unit study, and that was really fun.

 

I also found an old essay my 14 yr old daughter wrote back when she was in 6th grade. It was written during our unschooling days, so this excerpt should offer an interesting look into how our days used to look. Let me just warn you ahead of time that she was being exceedingly gracious in her description of me. 😉

 

Arianna- 14 (although this was written when she was 11 or 12)

“Shelly Sangrey is the best mom in the world. She is so patient. She has eleven kids, but we have ten kids still at home. Some days it’s rough, but everyday she wakes up and is happy to see us.

My mom unschools us. She is proud to see us learning…almost everyday. Some days we will sit on our electronics and play Minecraft. Other days we will make clay villages. We also paint, draw, cook, and do lots of other things.”
