A Tale of Ten Homeschoolers- We Start Monday!

Well, this will be my last post when everyone is still on summer break. Yay! School starts Monday for all my non-teens, and we couldn’t be more excited. In fact, when the copy paper and ink arrived in the mail a few days ago, the kids asked if we could start right away. 🙂 I love it. Unfortunately we couldn’t, though, because we’ve had a fairly busy week.

On Sunday we invited my mother and our oldest son over for a 4th of July cookout. Yes, I realize that was the 3rd, but I wanted to have it on a day when my husband wouldn’t have to wake up early for work the next day, so Sunday it was!

We didn’t do much on the real 4th of July. The kids and I did try to watch the fireworks from our front porch…but when my 5 year old went into the house to use the bathroom, the front door got stuck, and she had to wake my hubby up to get the door open because we were all locked outside. (Apparently, the heat had made our door expand. Interesting.) We ended up missing the vast majority of the fireworks then because we had to go inside so my husband could go to bed in case the door got stuck again. Bummer.

We had two birthdays this week. Bailey turned 9 on Tuesday and Caollin turned 12 on Thursday. Gosh, I’m getting old!

On Tuesday, Caollin and I had fun reviewing a make-your-own game on PA state parks. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle it because I am NOT crafty, but it was simple and fun- my two favorite ingredients!

Wednesday was our “deep clean day.” It’s a day of organizing, throwing things away, and basically doing a better job of cleaning than we normally do. *sheepish grin* We usually do this about once every six weeks, or before a major holiday or a new school year. It’s always nice to look at everything while it’s fresh, clean, and organized…until two hours later when it’s a mess again. Seriously. It happens every time, although the mess is more manageable.

After we were through cleaning on Wednesday, I printed out all of our notebooking and copywork we will be using next week. For now, Caollin, London, and Bailey will be notebooking for our read-aloud, Peter Panand for our Konos unit study on the scientific method. Luke, Ireland, Summer, and, possibly, Kenzie will be lapbooking through Five in a Row. We will be picking up where we left off with A Pair of Red Clogs.

Since the older kids and I will be learning about the scientific method, their independent reading books will be:

Caollin (12)- Giants of Science- Isaac Newton

London (10)- Who Was Albert Einstein?

Bailey (9)- Who Was Isaac Newton?

I really relish using living books as the core of our learning. Combined with hands-on activities and, now, notebooking, I think we’re going to have a great time.

This week, however, we’re still participating in Simple Homeschool’s  #GiveYourChildtheWorld summer book club. This week’s focus has been on Africa, so these were this week’s selections:

Caollin (12)-  Nelson Mandela’s Favorite African Folktales

London (10)- National Geographic African Critters

Bailey (9)- Elephants of Africa

Luke (7), Ireland (6), Summer (5), Kenzie (3) read-aloud- Jambo Means Hello Swahili Alphabet Book

Friday looks to be another busy day with two doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, and taking the birthday kids to spend their money from Granma. Fun.

What’s your week been like?

  1. I’m so jealous that you are all ready for the next school year on Monday. I’m still pulling my hair out trying to decide on a good curriculum for my “hands-on” daughter who has no interest in books.

        1. How old is your daughter? 6? Give it time. My 5 yr. old isn’t too fond of story books, but I’ve told her this year just to sit through it with the other kids. I try to make it fun by using funny voices and changing something in a story to see if anyone notices. As time goes on, she’s getting more used to it and interacting more. Do you think your daughter would like something like ABC Mouse?

          1. We’ve been using ABC Mouse and she likes it (a little), but what’s starting to become our saving grace is the Reading Rainbow app – have you seen it? Last night (FINALLY) she got excited about books and downloaded five and read them all in one sitting! 🙂 Fingers crossed this is a good sign of things to come.

  2. This week has been about procrastinating. No formal school happened.
We read a lot! I started & finished “The husband’s secret” on my Mommy day off. We also finished our read aloud “The Princess and Curdie” by George MacDonald (soooo good!)

  3. Wow sounds like you’ve had a massive hectic week! I’ve been busy but with two with a cold 😬 Sleeping on the kids floor seems to becoming the norm… Anyway great piece, very engaging! #KCACOLS

  4. We watched a few rounds of fireworks from inside our house looking out the window but we never actually made it to see any real big firework displays this year. Luckily, my kids didn’t really seem to care.

  5. Sounds like you’ve had a very productive week. I love the idea of a deep clean around a major holiday, would make it a much less daunting task if done on a regular basis! We watched fireworks from just outside our house too, such a shame your front door spoilt the fun! #KCACOLS

  6. Sounds like it’s been a packed week – two birthdays and a deep clean! :0 I love the process of having a big clear out before starting a new chapter, it makes it feel like a big fresh start for everyone. At least until the end of the week when all traces of it ever having happened have been obliterated… 🙂

Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday!

  9. Kudos to you for having such patience to teach at home. I would end up in a straight jacket. I have no patience but somehow thought that having kids was a brilliant idea. lol. But I do love being a mom. I love that you have a day you dedicate to organizing. I feel like it’s everyday for me. Except for the past couple of days. We just returned from a 5 day camping trip with absolutely no cell or internet service. Therefore we had to go, go, go to keep all the kids entertained. I’m pooped. Thanks so much for linking up with #momsterslink and I apologize for my delay in commenting but hope to see you again tomorrow!

    1. I’m glad you had fun on your camping trip and that you got to see your son before he lives for boot camp. My oldest is in the army reserves, and I was a total mess when he left for boot camp.

            1. Then it’s definitely Fort Leonard Wood. My son went there for military police, and my nephew went there for engineering. We absolutely loved our visit there. There’s a bowling alley, a mall, fast food, a museum, and much more on the base.

  10. We’re getting excited to start up school again too! We desperately need to do some deep cleaning, but it’s so bad, I think it’ll take us more than a day! Thanks for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com!
